India Monthly Rainfall in mm (Actual, Country as a Whole)
Source: statSCALAR
Key Takeaway
- India’s monthly actual rainfall provides an overview of the country’s overall monsoon performance and seasonal water availability. Monthly variations help identify periods of excess or deficient precipitation, which can influence crop sowing, irrigation requirements, soil moisture, reservoir replenishment, and agricultural productivity. Comparing monthly rainfall across years helps assess monsoon variability and its potential implications for crop production, food supply, and agricultural commodity prices.
About This Dataset
India’s monthly rainfall data represents actual area-weighted rainfall (in mm) for the country as a whole, covering monthly observations across India. The data is useful for analysing rainfall patterns, seasonality, monsoon performance, and their potential impact on agricultural production and commodity markets.
India receives roughly three-quarters of its annual rainfall during the southwest monsoon from June to September, so monthly totals rise sharply from June and peak in July and August. This country-wide series is the headline indicator for kharif sowing, reservoir levels, rural demand and food inflation. It is widely used by agribusinesses, commodity traders, insurers and economists as a first read on the season.
Total values are given for Jan to Dec of each year.
